James and Jane, the owners of Exeter’s own Tea Merchants, ‘The House of Hope & Mercy in the Jungle’ offer lovers of a good brew a fine collection of their favourite, ethically sourced, high-grade teas.
The tranquil and attractively decorated shop in Fore Street presents visitors with an array of exotically names teas such as Iron Goddess of Mercy (Ti Kuan Yin), Phoenix Honey Orchid (Mi Lan Xian) and Big Snow Mountain (Da Xue Shan). House Blends created from carefully selected leaves with balanced flavours and infused with natural organic oils, sit alongside Single Origin Teas especially selected from different locations around the world to create a super collection of the finest quality.
James and Jane have a strong ethos about the tea they source and the suppliers they work with are independent small producers and Ethical Tea Partnership Gardens, which means the tea on sale is not sourced from big plantations. Instead, great care is given to how the leaves are grown and the welfare of the workers who are employed to plant and harvest.
This attitude towards supporting others extends to collaborating with local potters to produce the lovely selection of tea ware sold in the shop. The delicately crafted tea pots, cups and spoons are all exquisitely handmade and are designed to enhance your tea drinking experience.
Ritualized tea making practices are part of Asian culture and in the summer of 2018 the shop will host a series of Chinese Tea Ceremony events presented by Yujia Xu, a certified Chinese Tea Ceremony specialist who was raised in Yunnan province, China. Information can be found on the shop’s website.
James and Jane look forward to welcoming you to their shop and sharing their passion for quality, ethically sourced tea.
