This week the UK celebrates National Chocolate Week. InExeter.com takes a look at four stores specialising in chocolates in Exeter city centre.
If there is one thing Exeter does best it’s mixing well-known high street brands with lovely independents, and our chocolatiers are no different. Chococo and Choccie Bar are two indies on Gandy Street that specialise in beautiful handcrafted chocolates, while national favourites Thorntons and Hotel Chocolat can be found on the High Street and in Princesshay.
With just a few days left to get involved in any Chocolate Week events we have put together a quick guide to what’s on in Exeter at each chocolatier and which chocolatey goodies you should be looking out for as we settle into autumn and winter.
The newest addition to the chocolatiers of Exeter, Chococo opened its doors on 18th June this year. Run by husband and wife team Andy and Claire Burnet, Exeter is their third chocolate house, stocking handmade chocolate made using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. As well as a range of different chocolate boxes and slabs, there are some novelty gift ideas from chocolate robots to fish and chips. Look out for their Halloween chocolate pumpkins, Christmas Nutcracker & Sugarplum Fairy Tubes and yummy hot drinks available in their café. There are ‘Meet the Chocolatier’ events and competitions taking place over the weekend, so head to Gandy Street to get involved.
At the top of Gandy Street lies indie Choccie Bar, creating a whole range of different handcrafted chocolate. With lots of flavours on offer including the Chilli Collection, there is a chocolate taste for everyone. Choccie Bar plays host to some great workshops and events, including chocolate-making masterclasses and even has its own Junior Chocolatiers Club teaching children how to make their own chocolate goodies. Keep an eye out for their new ‘dragon eggs’, Halloween shapes and Christmas Advent Calendar! They also create bespoke corporate and wedding gifts plus hampers and gift sets perfect for any chocolate lover.
High Street favourite Thorntons is always full of gift boxes, goodie bags and unique chocolatey ‘characters’ suitable for any age. The popular personalisation feature allows you to add a message or name to create the perfect gift. In celebration of Chocolate Week there are a few different offers in store, including 3 for 2 on some seasonal boxes, plus samples of their latest autumnal treats. Fireside Favourites is this season’s limited edition selection box, but you can also expect to see Christmas favourites The Snowman and The Snowdog appearing in store.
Luxury chocolatier Hotel Chocolat can be found in Princesshay in Exeter. There is a chocolate flavour for everyone in this chocolate shop, from boozy treats for the adults to ‘Tiddly Pots’ for smaller mouths. Brilliant for gifts to friends or family, there is something for every chocolate lover here. Try out some Halloween treats with a Yumpkin, some Beastly Bites or maybe an Oozy Eye and stock up on those Christmas gifts with a variety of different hampers and goodie bags.
