Devon Youth Orchestras and Choirs present a concert of exciting and beautiful music for a summer evening performed by Devon’s leading young musicians.

The programme will range from exquisite choral items to epic orchestral works and film scores with music to suit all ages and tastes.

Devon Youth Orchestras

The 2 Devon Youth Orchestras have been run independently by Paul Painter since 2010.

The Concert Orchestra (DYCO) is aimed at approximately Grade 3 standard upwards. There is no audition as players are invited to try it for themselves. The repertoire includes film themes, light classics and any music with appeal to young orchestral players.

The Symphony Orchestra (DYSO) is for Grade 6 standard players upwards and will play more demanding music including suitable movements from symphonies, orchestral suites and interesting works from a range of musical periods.

Both orchestras, currently numbering 80 players, have monthly rehearsals throughout the year as well as an inclusive 3-day residential for each at Buckfast Abbey in the autumn half-term. We perform regularly at events such as the Devon County Show and the Devon Schools Mix and, alongside our regular sectional coaching, work with a range of locally and nationally recognised musicians including members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and BBC orchestras.

Devon Youth Choirs

The Devon County Junior Choir was formed in 2007 by Rachel Smith as part of the Chorister Outreach Project followed by Schola Exe in 2012.

The choirs are a joint venture between Devon Music Service and Exeter Cathedral. There are currently over 80 children aged 7 – 18 who attend weekly practices on a Saturday morning. The choirs have collectively performed in 105 concerts in the last decade; these include performances of Britten’s St Nicolas, Mahler’s 8th Symphony and Britten’s War Requiem. The choirs mainly perform in Exeter Cathedral, but have also performed in Truro Cathedral, Buckfast Abbey, Exeter University Great Hall and in other venues around the county and have performed with The King’s Singers, Hayley Westenra, Will Young, Exeter Philharmonic Choir and Exeter Festival Chorus to name but a few.
