Dr Bob Higham, of the University of Exeter, will explain how past research into 11th-century Exeter has highlighted its importance both as Devon’s defended, ecclesiastical and administrative centre and as a flourishing urban community. New research suggests that high status enclaves within the city’s street pattern were related to some of these functions.
