InExeter has confirmed that members of the Exeter Chiefs will take to the stage on Thursday 16 November to officially switch on the city’s festive lights. England’s Premier League Champions will ‘press the button’ to illuminate Exeter for the festive period during the annual Christmas light switch on. InExeter’s event draws thousands of residents and visitors to the heart of the city in what has become a huge family friendly celebration.
Professional staging will be erected in Princesshay Square from which hosts Radio Exe will introduce three hours of entertainment and live music from local musicians. The evening will kick off the first of six Thursdays leading up to Christmas when shops will stay open until late.
The Christmas light switch on event will start at 4pm when local school children will give a festive performance of traditional carols, followed by a timetable brimming with entertainment. There will be a family friendly mix with music from Exeter Cathedral Choristers, the Festive House Band and the Exeter-based, Jonah & The Superband. Theatre company Little Soldier will take to the stage with their Christmas coming-of-age quest ‘Journey to the Impossible’ courtesy of The Bike Shed Theatre and Exeter College Performing Arts students will give an exciting performance of Taiko drumming. Exeter Chief players will be welcomed on to the stage at 6.15pm to officially switch on the Christmas lights.
This year, as last, InExeter has funded city-wide Christmas illuminations, lighting up many streets including Gandy Street, North Street, South Street, Fore Street, Paris Street and Sidwell Street. Illuminations will also light up the Cathedral Yard where this year’s new look Christmas Market, supported by InExeter, will open on Thursday 16 November.
As well as the Christmas light switch on and city illuminations, InExeter has produced a dedicated Christmas Guide and is supporting a series of events in the BID area. These include the Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market from 16 November, Gandy Street’s Countdown to Christmas on Thursday 23 November and The Fore Street Flea on Sunday 26 November. Visitors and residents of the city can pick up their free copy of the Christmas Guide at the Visitor Information Centre.
