Blink and you’ll miss it. Devon Coffee can be considered one of Exeter’s hidden gems, squeezed into a tiny spot on Queen Street. But once you discover it, you’ll want to keep it to yourself – it’s friendly, cosy, and charming, and the perfect place to put your feet up at the end of a long day.
The heart of the business is very simple – a really, really good cup of coffee. Justine, the owner of Devon Coffee, is a firm believer in using local speciality coffee blends. The house-blend is from the Exeter-based roasterie Crankhouse Coffee, but Justine has recently installed a second grinder to showcase guest roasters from around the South West region.
With wood-panelled walls and eclectic décor, Devon Coffee has a homespun appeal. Alongside coffee and an array of delicious home-made cakes, Devon Coffee also sells a small collection of coffee-making paraphernalia such as hand-grinders, pour-over filters and coffee jugs, marking this place’s credentials as a home for coffee aficionados. The art on the walls is also available to buy.
Devon Coffee currently boasts a number of loyal regular customers – however, Justine is constantly working to improve whatever she can to draw in the public. For example, there are plans to start expanding the menu, as well as a promise to keep using the highest quality coffee available.
Next time you’re walking down Queen Street, look out for the shop with the orange front – you’ll be a Devon Coffee devotee before you know it.
