#FinditInExeter with Hutch

Hutch is the pop-up indoor jungle tucked away on Paris Street, bursting with an enormous selection of glorious terrariums and houseplants.

Shop owners Frankie & Rob recently moved to Exeter from Birmingham. The pair were seeking an opportunity to escape mundane office life and replace it with a fresh start where they could finally do something for themselves.

The inspiration behind Hutch was completely random: Frankie developed a passion for making Terrariums after doing a ‘how to make a terrarium’ course, which Rob bought her the voucher for in London over a year ago. She started experimenting with different glassware, and with that she then began doing craft fayres and market stalls. The success she found at these events led to the natural progression of a hobby becoming a potential career, then Hutch was born.

The pop-up shop has been extremely popular, with all ages showing an interest. However, with Instagram as daily proof, houseplants are undoubtedly an enormous millennial trend:

“Due to the impact of things like Blue Planet, everyone seems to be a bit more conscious about the environment and being plastic free. It’s a really nice thing for young people to be into. Being into plants is good for you, you’re learning things, it’s good for the environment, and good for the soul.”

As well as being hugely fashionable amongst the younger generation, Frankie & Rob have found there are people who come into the store and say “ah, I used to have one of those”, as terrariums were a huge craze in the 70s.

The tricky part of their work has been finding glassware to form the terrariums (a traditional terrarium is made using a carboy). Their aim is to use mainly vintage or unique pieces, so that each terrarium has character and a story.

When you step off the busy street and into Hutch, the air seems a thousand times purer and you feel immediately calm. With a rough estimate of between 700 – 1000 plants coming into the shop every other week, Hutch caters for everyone’s taste and needs. At Hutch you will find exquisite items to brighten your home, or a place where you can hide away and soak up the natural paradise with a cuppa in the cosy corner.

Due to the ever-growing success of Hutch and an increasing interest in houseplants and terrariums, Frankie & Rob run monthly terrarium-making workshops. The next one will be held on Wednesday 18 April.
