If you go down to Gandy Street today, you’re sure of a big surprise. Enter the new and exciting world of Maker Mart to discover very beautiful, locally crafted items.
For this week’s #FinditinExeter we chatted to the team behind the recently opened independent space that lets Devon designer-makers showcase and sell their work. Supported by Exeter Phoenix, Maker Mart brings a unique way to shop local in Exeter.
Motivated to give local makers the credit they deserve, Maker Mart opened in December 2019. The shop evolved from the popular craft and Etsy fairs that were hosted at Exeter Phoenix, and now provides a year-round space for Devon designer-makers to be celebrated.
With over 100 makers stocked, Maker Mart offers something for everyone. Whether you’re after a unique piece of jewellery, a quirky greetings card or print, ceramics for the home or even luxury baby aromatherapy oils, this space will have it all.
Nia, the designer and curator behind Maker Mart, handpicks the items that fill the surfaces of the shop. She hopes to grow the product offering of the space with more wonderfully quirky designs that the maker community has to offer. No visit to this creative space will ever be the same, with its ever-growing team of makers and fresh evolving work.
The intimate Maker Mart team is made up of Exeter Phoenix employees and volunteers – including the makers themselves! Maker Mart also offers support to local makers and provides them with a community to meet other like-minded individuals. As it evolves throughout 2020, Maker Mart will look to hold events and workshops alongside offering a café space for makers and the public to come and work over a cup of coffee.
So, whether you’re looking for the perfect treat for yourself or a pal, are a creator yourself, or would like to get involved in the arts through volunteering, Maker Mart is the perfect place for you.
Maker Mart is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10am – 5pm. Visit the website for more information.
