For this week’s #FindItInExeter we wandered along to Gandy Street to the brilliant Red Panda, which serves up delicious and authentic Asian street food.
Red Panda landed in Exeter in April 2018 and is fast becoming the go to lunch spot in the city.
The takeout eatery specialises in simplicity; which comes in the form of a bao bun – the super tasty star of Red Panda’s show. A bao bun is an Asian delicacy that consists of marinated slices of tofu or meat and other condiments sandwiched between steamed, cloud-like, bread. Vegans rejoice; Red Panda has you covered!
Owner, James, was inspired by the 20 years he spent living in China. A culture shaped by cooking, he and his partner Natalie (who fronts the Lyme Regis Red Panda branch) discovered their passion for cooking during their time here together.
Jump forward to today, and Red Panda has organically grown a strong, loyal following. Both from rave reviews and intrigued passersby who can’t get enough of James’ honest conversation and the riot of colour he prepares before your eyes.
Red Panda’s ethos and mission is to have zero waste, zero food miles, zero plastic and ultimately zero impact (apart from in our tums!). That’s why, though the entire menu is Asian inspired, if an ingredient needs to be sourced from afar it is instead substituted for a local alternative. To also achieve zero waste, James freshly prepares just enough ingredients daily and when they are gone, the kitchen is simply closed.
With Chinese New Year just around the corner it’s even more reason to head to Red Panda if you haven’t already, and word on the street is there’s an exciting addition coming to the menu very soon with an extremely funky name.
So what are you waiting for? Slip that packed lunch out of sight and head straight to Red Panda.
Red Panda is open Monday – Saturday, 11am – 3pm.
