Meet the Face with Philippa Rutherford, co-owner of Mantis

Walking down Gandy Street you will find many wonderful independent businesses and one of the first you will come to and one of the longest standing on the street is Mantis. Started in 2000 by husband and wife team Nigel and Philippa, Mantis will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this spring.

Home to stunning contemporary 925 silver jewellery, made by artisan designers from around the globe as well as Nigel himself at their Exeter workshop, Mantis prides itself on one of a kind, bespoke items. Nigel loves making jewellery, particularly one of their best sellers, sterling silver pebble necklaces made from tiny pebbles found on the banks of the River Exe and embossed with letters, perfect for a personalised gift.

hilippa says, “Mantis has grown and developed over the past 20 years and it’s safe to say that Nigel has found his calling in life when it comes to jewellery making. It is a long process but one that means we can offer one off pieces as well as limited editions which we think is very important. Nigel works with a lot of recycled silver, as we try to be more environmentally friendly. We also continue to buy from small businesses in the South West meaning we know our suppliers really well which for us is so important.”

Not only selling gorgeous jewellery, Mantis also stocks a fantastic range of soaps by The Natural Soap Company and The Country Candle Company Scented Candle Tins, giving the shop an incredible aroma. With scents including milk spice, cardamom and orange, white lavender and calendula it’s choosing your favourite that’s the hard part.

Mantis is a one stop shop for gorgeous gifts. With a stunning range of contemporary fashion jewellery made with enamel, resin and beads, beautiful printed scarves, stylish vegan leather handbags and an eclectic range of unique gifts you are sure to find something for that special someone or a beautiful gift for yourself.

During this time, Mantis is offering alternative ways to shop. Mantis already has an online shop, but Philippa has started a telephone order system, whereby shoppers can either email or phone the store about a product and pay via PayPal. Mantis can then post out or deliver if within walking distance of city centre.
